ENGLISH 1 & 2 STAAR REDESIGN 2023 | Reading SCR Bundle

Two incredible resources in this bundle: a 2 week SCR unit and foldable notes with sentence stems that assist in student writing.

To ensure student success, the unit comes with a simple ACE formula and a gradual release of responsibility method that supports struggling students through the reading and writing process. The foldable notes give students paragraph stems to begin writing confidently and correctly. To save you time, each lesson comes with aligned TEKS, detailed instructions, and answer keys to show possible responses. Direct reluctant learners to their foldable notes to foster independence.

This was formally the short answer response between the years of 2012-2017, and it has now been brought back to life. The good news? It is actually easier to pass. Let me show you how. With 10 years of STAAR experience, I am confident this unit will deliver what you need.

Discover more details below.

The STAAR Reading SCR Unit includes 6 lessons:

Lesson 1: Notes on the SCR: what it is, how it is scored, examples of what it looks like, and steps for students to use to find success. There are sentence stems to help struggling writers, and SCRs for students to practice analyzing and scoring.

Lesson 2: With a partner or in a small group, student complete a gallery walk with 5 photos for which they will write an SCR. Writing worksheet is provided. Students share out one of their SCR responses and the class scores it with teacher guidance.

Lesson 3: Class reads a reading excerpt together. There are 3 levels for the teacher to choose from: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Some of the passages are also available in ReadWorksยฎ. The teacher models and writes the SCR and students copy while providing feedback.

Lesson 4: Students work on a reading passage (beginner, intermediate or advanced) and SCR as partners or in a small group. Students then complete a reflection sheet on their writing before conferencing with the teacher. Teacher provides feedback for students to edit for a better score.

Lesson 5: Students choose a reading passage (beginner or intermediate) to complete an SCR on. Teacher can complete a feedback form for the students to then use to edit their SCR for a better score.

Lesson 6: Teacher gives student a reading excerpt (beginner, intermediate or advanced) to read and complete an SCR on their own. This is the assessment.

The STAAR Reading SCR Paragraph Stems Foldable are for students to use to practice writing the Reading SCR. The flip notes are divided into genres: personal narrative (memoir), poetry, argumentative, short stories, and informational text.

Prompts are given, and students have paragraph stems to use to write their response.
